MONKEY SAFARI - BIG MAMA EP - OUT ON BEATPORT NOW!

New Monkey Safari ep "Big Mama" exclusively out on beatport this week. The two brothers from Halle, Germany are the next duo to shine on Jackmode, with their recent ep beeing supported by the likes of Catz n Dogz, Format B, Aka Aka, Shlomi Aber and Noir.

Monkey Safari are well known for their African rhythm infused beats, swinging jazzy productions, and generally throwing in a bit of sampling class left right and centre - whether it be orchestral, gypsy, or classical choir. With this latest release on Jackmode the duo step it up a notch to deliver what could be their most eclectic release yet. With "Son" we receive a beautiful epic; a goose-bump inducing vocal with a groove to match. "Balkonia" is a gypsy band's orchestral warm-up teamed with a body-jacking bassline. Finally "Mehndi" brings together traditional vocals with torrents of percussion and a big pounding pay off on the drop.

CREED & STONE AUTUMN MIX!!

James Creed and Dickon Stone met in the Spring of 2011 where their work for Klasse Recordings and Jackmode Agency (respectively) brought them in contact with much of Berlin's underground House scene.

With varying experience between them in the realms of DJing and Music Production, as well as a matching determination to bring their own blend of percussive tech house and deep rolling grooves to any dancefloor that would have them, the pair began their journey as Creed & Stone.

"In the 1840s a certain neighborhood in San Francisco was nicknamed, “The Barbary Coast.” It was described as “the haunt of the low and the vile of every kind…Dance-halls and concert-saloons, where blear-eyed men and faded women drink vile liquor, smoke offensive tobacco, engage in vulgar conduct, sing obscene songs and say and do everything to heap upon themselves more degradation, are numerous.”

This new EP from J. Phlip fits that description nicely. Deep and dirty with filthy ghetto sample drops.

NAT SELF - DINNER PARTY ON THE MOON EP by Jackmode

Following upon the successes of its roster showcase nights in London, Paris, Berlin, Bern and Zurich, Jackmode Agency, who represent an eclectic but considered roster incl. Homework, Justin Martin, Round Table Knights, Solo, Oliver $, Mercury, Zombie Disco Squad to name but a few, will now be releasing its artists music through its own label.

Jackmode’s first label EP release “Dinner Party on the Moon” by Nat Self (one half of Zombie Disco Squad) is a good example of the collective passion for House and Techno music encountered across the Jackmode roster, and has already been pushed by the likes of Justin Martin, Solo and Jesse Rose, amongst others.

On the EP’s A side, “Madam Bazooka”, is an energetic, fruity house track which one could envisage hearing in clubs from New York to Berlin via London. The Hanne & Lore remix achieves that rare symbiotic blend of house and techno, appreciated by both enthusiasts in equal measure. It is a dreamy track infused with a touch of calypso and suggests that there is more to come from this talented duo who have already released tracks on Monaberry and Style Rockets.

On the B side, Mr. Monkey is a a carnival-esque bouncy, bassy fanfare. In turn, Rachel Barton’s remix is deep, percussive, melodic and housey. Now starting to build an impressive back catalogue, including having her last EP remixed by Justin Martin, the future is bright for Rachel Barton.

On the whole, “Dinner Party on the Moon” provides a great introduction to the eclectic sound that Jackmode will be dishing out.

Man Recordings latest release is a very special occasion for the label since it’s the debut album by Man’s own head, Daniel Haaksman. The label is based in Berlin, though starting as an imprint for Baile Funk, nowadays is one of the most important contributors to a contemporary club sound reflecting a hyper-accelerated, globalised world where musical genres melt together until they become indefinable.

Daniel Haaksman is undeniable “Funkeiro Numero Um Da Alemanha” (“Germany´s #1 Funkeiro”, a “funkeiro” is Brazilian slang for Funk follower) and impressively proves this with his debut album, going even one step further. “Rambazamba” might be deeply rooted in the aesthetic of Baile Funk, but takes the Brazilian sound as starting point for a journey into the soundscapes of local music going global all around the world.

And so, Man Recordings proudly present to an unsuspecting public Daniel Haaksman’s first album under his own name, full of the Haaksman trademarks of hypnotic cut-up vocal clips, thundering percussion, exotic horns and Portuguese refrains. “Manda Bala” (go for it) as they say!

Round Table Knights started life as a scratch collective from Bern, Switzerland, with a penchant for hip-hop, rock, electro and jazz. The duo succeeded where many fail, in bringing together disparate influences ranging from pop, electro, disco, dub, jazz, garage, and swing, and uniting them in a coherent and dynamic album, which has been getting love from all sides of the dance music spectrum.

We can't wait to have them headline the Jackmode & Pelski stage this summer, and we've got a taster for you in their exclusive Gottwood Presents Podcast. With fresh cuts from the likes of Zombie Disco Squad, Soul Clap and Henrik Schwarz, as well as some new stuff of their own, it's a stormer. We caught up the duo for a chat about sampling, beards and Switzerland...

What's been keeping you busy lately?

Touring, we just got back from Australia. It was super nice, our first festival tour there. In the studio we're working on some remixes right now, and there is also some new original material on the way, plus a mix CD.

Tell us a bit about your Gottwood Presents mix...

We put some stuff together which we really like, old and new stuff. Also you can hear a new remix from us which will be out soon...

You have your musical roots in hip hop and turntabalism, what brought on the move towards house music?

It was just a natural progression. We're always looking out for new inspirations. Our love with house music started when we started producing music. It was the best way for us the express ourselves musically and combine all our influences.

Which Hip-Hop artists have influenced you the most?

A Tribe Called Quest, Camp Lo, Gang Starr, Wu-Tang, Common, Beat Junkies, Madlib, Jay Dee.

Your style of music features all kind of samples, and clearly takes in a lot from a variety of genres. Do you listen to obscure music purely to hunt for samples? What's the sampling process like for you?

I don't think I've ever found a good sample when I was actually searching for one. I'm not patient enough to listen to music for hours just to hunt for a sample. Most of our samples are from music we actually also listen to at home.

DJing as a duo must be a lot of fun, but do you ever have the urge to make music individually?

Marc: Of course we do! I play in a Rock Band as well called "Labrador City". We just released our first mini album "Volcano" on our own label "Oh, Sister".

Do you think growing up in Switzerland has had much of an effect on your music?

The environment always has a big effect on what you do. I think the good thing about growing up here was the big range of cultural events happening. Switzerland is so small and it's really easy to travel from city to city to go and see concerts. We also had the chance to do our own events very early in our career. That helped us a lot to get the connections we needed in the music world.

Do you have any tips for growing a good beard...

You have to shape it from time to time!

Your fantastic debut album Say What!? was released earlier this year and has been universally praised. How do you plan to follow it and what have you got in store for the rest of the year?

We're doing some remixes right now. There will be a new EP for sure and we are working on a mix CD.

Exciting stuff, we look forward to it! You've just finished touring Australia where you played some huge gigs, how are you finding your busy schedule?

We love it when we are busy!

If you could put on your dream party, where would it be, who would play and would there be a theme?

Marc: Somewhere at a beach in the summer, with a nice sunrise and Soul Clap playing.

Who are you?
I am Daniel Pearce, I am a music producer, DJ and general piss artist under the aliases Eats Everything & Thieve.

Where are you from?
A lovely little musical city called Bristol in the UK.

What do you do?
I mainly produce music and DJ, I also eat a fair amount.

What has been the biggest landmark in your career so far?
There have been many but I have just had an EP signed to Anabatic which is pretty cool and hearing that people like J Phlip, Catz n Dogz, Worthy and the like are supporting my music is really exciting!

What are your top tips for 2011?
Musically my top tips for this year are Julio Bashmore (obviously!), Andhim, Chris James, Ardalan, Christophe (Wicked DJ/Producer from Bristol, keep an eye out!), Waifs & Strays, Coat Of Arms and a San Fran based guy called Sepehr.

Generally my top tip is to always remember that you can’t polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter!

What is your musical background?
I am 30 years old now so my musical background is early house, people like Red Zone, Murk Boys, Rhythm Masters and The Sharp Boys but also Old Skool Hardcore/Jungle circa 1992-1994. DJ Ellis Dee is my favourite DJ of all time closely followed by DJ Easygroove, DJ SS and many others.

What are your top 10 favourite tunes right now?
There is so much good music out there at the moment, I would like to give a top 50 really, but I will try!!

Moodmusic are proud to present the debut LP from Martin Dawson 'Sunday
Smoking'. Having just started releasing under his own name in 2010, 'Sunday
Smoking' is the release that develops the growing relationship between
Martin and Sasse's Moodmusic label.

From the slower melancholic mood of 'Is This Goodbye?' to the hypnotic drive
of Morning Glory, this LP highlights the style Martin has been developing in
recent months with deep, warm sounds through a house and techno mentality.
Of the release Martin says "It's funny because it was not my original
intention to work on an album in this sense but after a very busy 12 months
in the studio I sort of fell onto it.

And the support and enthusiasm of Sasse added more fuel to the studio fire.
As a collection of tracks this LP goes a long way to represent the sound I
enjoy playing in the clubs!" Martin released his first album 'Chapters' as
King Roc in 2009 with critical acclaim and the success of this was
highlighted with the nomination for best producer in DJ mag.

Also known as one half of Two Armadillos, you can hear the influence working
with Giles has had on Martin's studio work and by the time this LP drops it
will have seen a 12 month period with Martin releasing with some the most
respected underground labels such as Cocoon, Get Physical, Crosstown Rebels,
2020vision, Kling Klong, Off and of course Moodmusic.

A continuing international touring schedule that includes Central and South
America, Australia, Asia and throughout Europe and the development of the
'Sunday Smoking' part to his live shows will be taking this album sound
across the globe.

Hello Matanza!

What's been keeping you guys busy lately?
Hello Friends! These last few weeks have been very hectic for us, after opening the show for LCD Soundsystem and Brodinski with great succes, we have been focusing on finishing new tracks, remixes, mixes and preparing for our show at Lollapalooza in Santiago de Chile!

How do the three of you know each other and how long have you been making music together?
Two of us have been DJing together for around 5 years and about 3 years ago we all moved in together in a big house aka The Studio, where we were experimenting and collecting all the instruments that are part of our cultural background. After a few years of experimenting together we decided in 2010 to leave the DJ format behind and bring the flutes and percussions to the stage, instruments that are fundamental for our new sound and that we've recorded with since the early years of the band.

Tell us a bit about your music, how would you describe it?
We use a lot of the the rhythms and chants of our native American traditions, but we also love the idea of developing and reinventing those sounds, mixing them with all our electronical influences, seeing folk music as something postmodern.

You're all from Santiago, Chile, what's the music scene like there?
Yes, the three of us live here, and the new scene is vibrant and making a lot of noise! There are loads of new talents and more and more promoters, and the fact that big fesivals are held here is always a good and positive sign.

And who have been your biggest musical influences over the years?
Wow, a lot of things! From the first Latin American Electronic downtempo of ESL music through to the full development of Cadenza Records, Ricardo Villalobos, Matias Aguayo. Also labels like Anabatic, Dubsided, Mad Decent, Made To Play and Dirty Bird have been fundamental in the evolution of House music wich we feel more related to, we call it Street House. And the past year has seen it really grow with the new wave of Global Ghetto Tech, with fundamental pillars in Mexico and the whole of Latin America.

You're known for playing with traditional South American instruments, could you tell us a bit about your live set up?
We´ve been slowly building up our collection of instruments which comes from different parts of South America. In our live set we use the Colombian 'Gaita', 'Zampoñas' (big pan flutes), Andean 'Bombo', the Dominican 'Tambora', bongos, bells and loads of others. These instruments are from different zones and not specially related to each other, but we mix them all on our laptops and midi controllers.

Wow, can't wait to see that! Do you think growing up in Santiago has had a big effect on the music you make?
Yes of course, we´ve been very influenced growing up surrounded by Latin American Culture!

What does the future hold for Matanza?
To keep throwing out good vibes to all our followers, and hopefully killing it in Europe!

What's been your favourite track of the last few months?
La Corporacion - Prizma Corp (Discobroz remix)

What do you guys get up to in your spare time?
Well Matanza is our main and only proyect in our lives at this moment, even though we collaborate with fellow musicians a lot, and we all do a lot of DJing. But most of the time we spend our time in Matanza's secret lab in downtown Santiago.

Who are you?
Florian Blauensteiner, DJ Motorpitch, RZA fan, music addict, trained audio engineer, interested in sushi, kung fu & nice people.

Where are you from?
I grew up in a small city in Austria. Considering the fact that being connected with like-minded people via internet forums, Skype, Twitter, etc. wasn‘t happening in the 90s, I didn‘t have much chance to collaborate with or get input from other producers. In my early days I just learned by trial & error. Now I‘m living in Vienna. A great place to call „home“.

What do you do?
Music production is my main job. My own stuff, the collabo with DJ Beware, radio jingles and promotion spots, giving input to other people while they are in the process of making music (a.k.a. the guy on the couch critizising everything; a great job!). And then there‘s DJing. I love good clubs. The whole vibe. It‘s a counterpart to locking myself up in the studio.

Because of working on the weekend I had to spend seven years without DJing, only making music and engineering other peoples tunes. Looking back now, that‘s a time where I clearly missed something. The right balance. Creating music is good but it also needs to be celebrated.
Sometimes national or international artist come to the radio station where I work and record a few songs in the well equiped recording studios. That‘s part of my routine too. I do the engineering and this can be pretty inspiring for my own productions. Mixing Edwyn Collin‘s songs left me deeply impressed. The guy really knows how to write and arrange music.

What is your musical background?
Four years of playing the violin, four years of playing the guitar, a few amazing weeks with a rented cello, irregular periods of heavy kalimba addiction and of course the obligatory ukulele. Sometimes I also jam on a turkish bağlama to relax.
I don‘t play any instrument well enough to record myself in the studio. My solution was to record a few sounds into the sampler, tweak them as much as possible and create a different instrument with it. And that‘s how I still work today when not tweaking synths.

Talk to us about your favourite piece of hardware...
That would definitely be the MS-404 made by the German audio manufacturer Doepfer. It was meant to be a clone of the Roland TB-303 but in the end got famous for sounding different from the original and being pretty unique. It‘s a monophonic analog synthesizer with superb sound quality. One oscillator, a knob for every function, no stepping through menus, no storing of presets. A very limiting piece of gear and at the same time super fast to use. That‘s what I like about it. I use it in nearly ever tune. Sometimes for lead sounds, sometimes for basslines. In our El Toro! tune the leadsound is the MS-404 running through a Roland RE-201 Space Echo. A bit of EQ and compression later but no more FX. This synth doesn‘t need heavy treatment to be big. A friend of mine found out how to tune it an octave lower and now it‘s also my first choice for subbass.

What are your top 10 tunes right now and why?
Tyree Cooper - Love ... I love his words of wisdom and how the lyrics and music interact. A wonderful song made of one piano loop plus dope drum programming and layering. Like a lot of 90s hip hop. A timeless feelgood tune.

Luca Lozano - Full Black ... This was a free giveaway from Klasse Recordings. Digital only. Incredible. I would love to have it on vinyl. It probably is the tune I‘ve been listening to most over the last couple of months.

Kevlar - Feelings Are Weapons (KINK's Psyche Dub Mix) ... I can‘t describe this one. It‘s noisy. It‘s hard. It should be the soundtrack of a Vietnam war movie when the soldiers are shooting heroin to forget what they are doing and seeing. When the sounds of the jungle blend with fear and pain, I guess this song is the result.

Mr. Ho - Bumps (Patrick Pulsinger RMX) ... Next one from Klasse Recordings. Techno legend Patrick Pulsinger fits a nice amount of electronic music‘s history in a little more than eight minutes. Super funky vocal chops.

Ream Daranoi - Fai Yen ... My favourite tune from Soundway‘s „The Sound Of Siam“ compilation. It was recorded in the 60s or 70s in Thailand.

Makossa & Megablast - Soy Como Soy (Florian Blauensteiner RMX) ... I‘m mixing house and dub on this one. Heavy use of the Roland Space Echo included. Works pretty well on the dancefloor.

Adele - Rolling In The Deep (Jamie XX Remix) ... Somebody in the crowd recorded a Jamie XX DJ set with his phone and put it on Soundcloud. It took me two weeks to find out which tune this is and when it will be out. Very minimal arrangement, raw drum sounds, beautiful synths. Jamie is an outstanding talent.

Daniel Haaksman - Hands Up (Beware + Motorpitch RMX) ... Biiiiig kick drum and an uplifting melody.

Joyce Muniz - Bedstories (Mr. Ho RMX) ... Super smooth remix. Works in the club as well as for next days breakfast at home. Banging drums programmed in a soulful way.

Motor City Drum Ensemble - Raw Cuts #5 ... Dirty, dirty, dirty.

What have you got in store for 2011?
I‘m working on a new EP with DJ Beware that will come out on Man Recordings. We also finished remixes for the Fagget Fairys (Palms Out Sounds) and Damian Schwartz (Anabatic Records) recently. Some more collabo tunes from Beware + Motorpitch are on the way too.
Besides that I‘ve had a couple of great months in the studio researching and shaping a sound for my solo project. Digging to the core of my love for music. My first EP as Florian Blauensteiner will be out on Klasse Recordings in a few months. 2011 is gonna be a busy year and I‘m looking forward to all of it very much.
